Masters & Heroes - Mel Odom

I remember seeing the cover of an OMNI magazine in my high school library, and being blown away. I didn’t know it then but I was looking at Mel Odom’s work. Surf the web and you won’t find much. But when you see it you will recognize his unique style almost instantly.

He has published illustrations for Playboy, Time, and OMNI magazines. As well he has done the cover art for many science fiction / fantasy novels including a number for Guy Gavriel Kay (Tigana, The Lions of Al-Rassan ).

He now seems to have retired from the biz in favour of making dolls. Which is cool I guess. If not a bit weird. But I think he really excelled at illustration. I don’t know much about dolls. Maybe these dolls are hot shit. But that boy could draw. Check out this image. One of my favs of his.

Juxtapoz Books

One of my favorite mags (Juxtapoz) has come out with a couple of books. One on Illustration and the other on too-tats. I have never been too keen on body parts photographed in poor lighting. I am saving up my pennies for the Illustration one though! Here it is on Amazon.

BluBlu Animated Graffiti

From the streets of Buenos Aires. You may have already seen this video titled "Muto" floating around. It is, in the words of the Monarch from the Venture Brothers, "Sick-House". But it is also worth a visit to blublu.org cause there is some great illustration and art there.

Warren Heise

Recently Warren Heise and Lee Mckay came over to the island on a kayaking trip. We went out for beers and I got to catch up on what my former art school / fellow inmates were up to. 90% of my memories of Warren at art school invlove him crouched over his drafting table, blowing his eyeballs out over some ridiculousely complex drawing. As always, he is up to something cool. Check out his website and you will see what I mean.

If you live in New York, or have the good fortune to be visiting, check out Pearl Paints in chinatown. It is six floors of every art supply you can think of. Staffed with grouchy/half starving art students to help complete the experience. In operation since 1933! www.pearlpaint.com

New Brow - The Rise of Underground Art

Ok so my first post of any real relevance is about a documentary coming out called "New Brow". It features interviews with some of my fav artists like Shepard Fairey, Silvia Ji, Camille Rose Garcia. And a whole lot more.

This is gonna be sweet. Can't wait. IMDB has its release date as 2009 sometime but check out their site for updates. www.newbrowfilm.com

Octopus vs. Squirrel has become "self aware"

I had to look up how to spell both octopus and squirrel just to make sure.

I think I got it.

btw- I guess I am legally obliged to let everyone know that it was my lovely partner Sheila who suggested I use this name for my blog. So there. Now I can avoid that costly court battle! However I did cross my fingers behind my back when she insisted I agree to share all merchandising revenue. So I got THAT going for me.
