Shep vs. AP
Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at 9:54PM Capitalism is no mouth-breather. It will bite you square in the ass if you get careless. Especially if you are the purveyor of creepy Orwellian campaigns (Obey Giant). The Lords of Industry don’t like it. Today the Associated Press alleged copyright infringement over the image used for Shepard Fairey’s Obama poster.

UPPERCASE Announces New Magazine!
Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at 9:29AM Janine Vangool from UPPERCASE has announced that she will be launching a new magazine. I have signed up and would highly recomend it to anyone “creative and curious”. If you have had any dealings with UPPERCASE before you will know that Janine puts 110% into everything she does… and it shows. I am very excited to get my first issue in the mail.

Tamara de Lempicka
Friday, January 23, 2009 at 5:55PM She was a Polish art deco painter/socialite who came up with some great stuff. Later in life (she died in 1980) she worked on a sickly series of flower paintings. I couldn’t find an example on the web.. but if you are ever in a book shop and see a biography on her, flip to the back and you will see what I mean. ugg.
Just proves that even the accomplished can miss-step. Anyway check out some of her early work. She managed to soften the cubist movements harsh lines and form it into a very pleasing, almost commercial style.

Andrew Wyeth Dies
Friday, January 16, 2009 at 10:46AM Andrew Wyeth passed away today.
Wyeth was a personal hero of mine. He loved what he did and it showed. He was popular for it too and it confounded the elite circle of art nerds of the time. They couldn’t allow for work that was popular to also be considered good. Which, in my opinion, is what is wrong with the art world.
You can’t see it but I am “tipping” my beer and pouring a drink to the ground for my homie.
Rest in peace Mr. Wyeth.

Masters & Heroes - Kris Lewis
Friday, January 9, 2009 at 12:09PM I have been an admirer of Kris Lewis for awhile now. With my current portrait project I have been looking at his work again for inspiration and thought I would share. I sometimes think of him as a modern de Lempicka (minus the cubist slant).

Happy 2009 .. oh and Sylvia Ji
Monday, January 5, 2009 at 10:38AM Happy 2009 everyone! Being all refreshed after some time off I am working on a new drawing. It is a portrait and I have some ideas of how I want to deal with the hair. Inspiring me partly is the work of Sylvia Ji. I won’t try anything so opulant but it sure is pretty to look at isn’t it?

OvS on Etsy
Thursday, December 4, 2008 at 5:26PM In an attempt to recoup some of the costs of my drawing addiction I have signed up for an Etsy shop. Although I realize my timing is perfectly, awsomely , wrong. A smarter person would have done it well in advance of the christmas season. Not me. I like the challenge!
It is up and running now at octopusvsquirrel.etsy.com but I plan a roll out in January so stay tuned!
