Masters & Heroes - Drew Struzan

What blog about illustration would be complete without an entry about the legendary Drew Struzan. He has illustrated posters and collectables for some of the greatest movies of all time. Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Blade Runner to name a very few. He started out as a album cover artist but was launched to greater things once he landed the Star Wars job.

He is a master of the airbrush and is a true old-school illustrator. No Photoshop or Illustrator here.

Creepy but Beautiful

In the words of my lovely partner this is “creepy but beautiful”. What an amazing playground for a graffiti artist.

What Do You Think?

There is a Obama Joker poster popping up in Los Angeles that seems to be causing a commotion. What is most interesting to me is that this is the second occurrence of a guerrilla style poster campaign, involving Obama, that has caught the publics attention in the recent past.(The first being Fairey’s “Hope” poster) Since when has illustration/design been so cool?! For the most part I have vowed to keep this blog politics-free but I really am interested in what folks have to say about it.

Some folks are calling this more than distasteful. While others are claiming it to be free speech in action. Is it inappropriate because he is popular? After all, a movie was made about assassinating George Bush while he was still in office and not too many people were upset. Was that acceptable because no one liked the guy?

Feel free to leave a comment!

Fun Typography from Keetra

Some interesting typography from Keetra Dean Dixon. Make sure and check out her other projects. Very creative, and apparently a partner in crime of Mr. Keller. I can only imagine their dinner conversations.

Dirty ol' Utamaro

It seems every Japanese artist went through a “drawing dirty hookers” stage. Not normally my thing. But this is a rare beauty.
